Coronavirus Safety Measures and Updates

Friday, April 10

Hello friends,

I hope this finds you healthy and well. We have an important change in our online offerings to share with you.

We have switched software systems for our live stream classes. Starting today, you will login to your KarmaSoft account and be able to register for live stream classes there. KarmaSoft is integrated with Zoom and you will get an email ten minutes before class starts with the Zoom link and password for the class. This means you must be pre-registered for class at least ten minutes before it starts. 

We made this switch for a few reasons, notably it will make it much easier for you to register for classes (no more date confusion!) and it allow students with passes for our in-person classes to use those for live classes if they so choose. What this means for you:

  • You have two options to practice with us: on-demand (classes anywhere, anytime) through Namastream and live classes through KarmaSoft/Zoom. If you’re curious about our on-demand classes, but want to try it out before committing, we have a free guided meditation here.
  • Going forward, if you want to register for additional live classes, you can check out our schedule here: https://pasttensestudio.com/schedule/. Our drop-in rate has been reduced to $15/class and there is no sales tax for online classes. If you are a member of our on-demand studio there is a 30% discount for live stream classes.
  • If you have a pass with our in-person studio, you will be able to use it to book live stream classes. Whether or not you do, when we reopen our physical studio all passes will be extended for the length of time we were closed.
  • If you had an in-person membership to the studio, it was suspended when we closed. I am happy to take your membership off suspension and you are welcome to use that for live stream classes.
  • When you check in for live stream classes you'll see your teacher and they'll see you. When you sign up, everyone in your home, including fur babies and kids, are welcome. And you don't have to live in DC to sign up. This is a great way to connect with out-of-town family and friends (we have an online birthday party joining Happy Hour tonight!).
  • Also, keep in mind that you need to pre-register at least ten minutes before class starts, but if you're running late, you will still be able to join the class. We don't lock our online doors. 😉
  • We are adding classes to the live stream schedule and on-demand membership regularly so keep an eye on both.

Hello friends,

I hope this finds you healthy and well. I wanted to thank you all for your support as we transition from in-studio classes to online. In addition to our on-demand video membership, we now have schedule of real-time, online classes up and running. This means when you check in for a class, you'll see the teacher and they'll see you (you can turn off your video after saying hello if you like). If you've already joined us for a live class, you know what a delight it's been to see each other again. If you haven't yet, we hope you will soon.

As we meet online, be sure to give Meagan a virtual high five or hug. She has been bending over backwards to make our online studio possible (must be all that camel practice). Real-Time, Online Live Class Schedule

Here's the current lineup of real-time, online classes. When you check in for these classes you'll see your teacher and they'll see you. When you sign up, everyone in your home, including fur babies and kids, are welcome. And you don't have to live in DC to sign up. This is a great way to connect with out-of-town family and friends (it was a thrill to have a mother-daughter duo join our Seasonal Yoga class!).
  • Mondays
    • Flow 1/2 with Alicia at 5:30 PM
  • Tuesdays
    • Senior Yoga with Emma at 9:00 AM
    • Yoga Strength Training with Rachel at 12:00 PM
    • Foundations of Yoga with Nichole at 5:30 PM
  • Wednesdays
    • Pilates with Jeneva at 9:00 AM
    • Kids Yoga with Dayna at 4:15 PM
    • Prenatal Yoga with Emmat at 5:30 PM
  • Thursdays
    • TBT Flow at 12:00 PM. This class features a rotation of former PT teachers including Joey, Erika and Michael.
  • Fridays
    • Happy Hour at 5:00 PM. This class features a rotation of PT teachers including Kelly, Jenna, Mallory and Nate. We'll enjoy a light-hearted flow and you're encouraged to grab your favorite drink and hang out after.
  • Saturdays
    • Pilates with Jennifer at 10:00 AM (starting April 11)
  • Sundays
    • Flow 1/2 with Ellie at 10:00 AM
    • Restorative Yoga and Sound Bath Meditation with Paige at 8:00 PM

On-Demand Classes

Practice with us anytime with our online membership. You'll find classes of all lengths, levels, and styles including Flow, Beginner, Restorative, Kids Yoga, Senior Yoga, and Prenatal Yoga. You'll also find Pilates and Foam Rolling and specialty classes like Yoga for Runners and Yoga for a Good Night Sleep.

Throughout this crisis, we will add:

  • A new, full-length class and short meditation on Mondays
  • Two, shorter classes on Thursdays

We also have gift certificates for one-month membership and one-year membership that let you share the gift of yoga with friends and family all over the world.

Please keep in mind, your in-person membership and all passes have been proactively suspended so this is a great way to continue your practice and support the studio.

Create Connection with Private Classes 

If you're looking for creative ways to alleviate stress, teambuild, or connect with your team, friends, neighbors, or family, consider a virtual private yoga class. Past Tense teachers are available to lead your group in an experience that will help your group get out of their heads and into their bodies. Or at least spice up your Zoom dates. Friday, March 20:

Dear Yogis,

Not sure about you, but it has been a week.

As we all adjust to this situation, establish new routines, and face new fears and anxieties, please take some measures to mitigate the stress. Whether it's dog videos, FaceTime with friends, or yoga, finding a bit more peace of mind, also protects our bodies and our neighbors. Stress compromises our immune system, which is the opposite of what we need now. Even small reductions in stress can make a big difference in our ability to stay healthy.

Practice With Past Tense Anytime, Anywhere
(While still respecting social distancing)

Of course, when we need our community more than ever, it comes as a bit of an assault to go without. While online offerings won't come close to smiling, laughing and practicing together, it is the best we have right now. As you know, we launched an online membership this week. Throughout this crisis, we will add:

  • A new, full-length class on Mondays
  • Two, shorter classes on Thursdays

Support Past Tense Teachers Directly

Many of our team members are full-time teachers who have just lost a significant amount of income or are hourly workers who are now at risk. While we are working together to support one another, you are welcome to donate directly to PT team members here. None of this will go to the studio. It will go to teachers and staff in need.

Monday, March 16:

UPDATE: Hi friends. A few quick follow up items from my earlier message (below if you missed it).

  • Many Internet reliant sites including Namastream, which hosts our online membership, are experiencing connectivity issues and your page load time may be slower than normal. Namastream is aware of the issue and working to deploy multiple backup solutions. The cloud is just overwhelmed by the number of people online now.
  • To access our online membership you will need to create a new login to sign up. It is free to sign up and login. Once you sign up and login, you'll be able to see the paid and free content. This includes the different options for online membership -- monthly and annual -- and a free guided meditation. And, as we add workshops, live stream events and other options, you'll be able to see them all here. But you do need to create a new login to do so; your KarmaSoft one will not work. (Though feel free to use the same username and password when you do create a new one).
  • Because of the Internet issues, we weren't able to live stream today's free guided meditation on Namastream. We did live stream it on Instagram and you can access it there or the Past Tense Facebook Group. I will upload it to Namastream as soon as we are able and you'll be able to access it anytime you want or need.
  • To clarify, I have proactively put all memberships and passes on hold. To stay practicing with us and support the studio, please join the online membership. Our long-term intention is to share four new videos each month. Dearest Yogis,

We hope you are doing well as we know there's a lot on all of our minds right now. We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and kindness and wanted to share a quick update with all of you.

  • Online Classes. We have been working on a virtual studio for the last few months and it is live. Our long-term intention is to share four new videos each month. However, for the duration of this crisis, we will be sharing new content a few times a week.Online classes are a variety of lengths, levels, and formats, including Flow, Pilates, Foam Rolling, Senior, and Kids Yoga. They are available on demand, so you can practice whenever works for your schedule. To find out more or sign up, join us here.
  • Free Meditation. To kick off our online membership and help us start off the work week right, please join me tomorrow at noon for a free, guided, ten-minute meditation. Join us here.
  • Community. In this time of crisis, community support is even more necessary. Social distancing means we're taking it online. Please join our Private Facebook Group. We'll be sharing daily-ish self-care and wellness resources (recipes from Nichole, Kids Yoga games from Dayna, etc.). We'll also be hosting virtual coffee breaks and happy hours.
  • Your Support. Many in our yoga community have asked what you can do to support the studio. The offers to continue paying for memberships or to buy gift certificates have been overwhelming. Your generosity and kindness in this time of crisis has made a tough time easier. Friday, March 13: 

In light of the ever-evolving situation with COVID-19, we have made the very difficult decision to temporarily close the studio effective immediately. If you have crucial questions to ask or if you need to tell me you have been exposed, please call or email Kelly.

To clarify, we did not have a confirmed case or any suspicion of exposure. This is a precaution and because we feel it’s the most responsible way for us to keep our community healthy and safe.

Thank you very much for your ongoing support and all of the kindness you have shared with us over the last few days. We look forward to getting through this and practicing together again soon.

Some important details:

  • We will be pausing all memberships, class passes and new-student trials. You will not lose any classes with us.
  • We will be offering a video membership. Please stay tuned for details.
  • Members, you must pick up your mat and bring it home to wash and disinfect. Mats that are not picked up will be quarantined for at least 14 days andinaccessible until the studio reopens. You may pick it up at the studio during these times:
    • Today, Friday, March 13 between 11:00-1:00
    • Today, Friday, March 13 between 5:00-6:00
    • Saturday, March 14 between 8:30-9:30
    • Sunday, March 15 between 9:00-10:00
  • If you are interested in purchasing a discounted mat or foam roller for at-home practice, you may stop by the studio during the times above to purchase gear while it is available. We're offering them at an additional 10% off, which takes them to cost. We are using ClearGear to clean mats and props at the studio. We have small, personal bottles for sale at cost in the lobby.
  • If you would like to order a block or strap for your personal use at our discounted, wholesale price, please complete this form. We will be submitting a bulk order to Manduka on Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm. Tune Up balls are available on Amazon and tennis balls are a great substitute.
  • And while we're talking health precautions, please log into your Past Tense account and make sure your emergency contact information is up to date.

Thursday, March 12:

In light of the ever-evolving situation with the Corona virus, please note the safety precautions we are taking to maintain a healthy environment.

  • We are limiting class size to 15 students to allow greater physical distance between students.
  • We will be offering our Tuesday and Thursday Senior Yoga class in person AND via live stream. We are assessing whether this will be an option for more of our classes.
  • We are removing our complimentary mats tonight (Thursday, March 12). Please bring your own. We have discounted mats for sale in the lobby and will be offering an additional 10% off through the end of the month. If it's not possible to bring your own, please ask the front desk for one. You will be provided with a special disinfectant and single-use wash cloth to clean it after class and then you may return it to the desk.
  • Blankets and eye pillows will be removed from the studio spaces today (Thursday, March 12).
  • Blocks and straps are being cleaned and disinfected frequently. We strongly encourage you to bring your own. If you would like to order a block or strap for your personal use at our discounted, wholesale price, please complete this form. We will be submitting a bulk order to Manduka on Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm.
  • Foam rollers and Tune Up balls are being cleaned and disinfected frequently. We strongly encourage you to bring your own. We have discounted foam rollers for sale in the lobby and will be offering an additional 10% off through the end of the month. Tune Up balls are available on Amazon and tennis balls are a great substitute.
  • Bolsters are being cleaned and disinfected frequently. Please bring in your own pillow case to cover them.
  • Members, please bring your mats home to thoroughly wash and disinfect them. It's important you let them completely air dry.
  • We are using ClearGear to clean mats and props at the studio. We have small, personal bottles for sale at cost in the lobby.
  • We have removed hand towels from the bathroom and replaced them with paper towel. We will replace them with single-use wash cloths in the coming days.
  • We will provide hand sanitizer when we can get our hands on it.
  • Teachers have been asked to stop using hands-on assists.
  • In addition to our daily studio cleaning procedures, we are disinfecting door handles, faucets and other commonly touched items.
  • As always, we are willing to pause memberships. Given the circumstances we are making an exception and will pause passes as well. Please email us if you need help with that or have other questions.
  • And while we're talking health precautions, please log into your Past Tense account and make sure your emergency contact information is up to date.

We want to keep offering classes and to provide an opportunity for calm in this unprecendented situation. We also want to keep everyone healthy. We will continue to monitor the situation, make adjustments as the situation warants and try to maintain that balance.
